Responsible travel: enjoy the corridor without treating it like a backdrop

Small choices around access, wildlife, culture and parking have a real effect in places that welcome millions of visitors.

Travel with context

The corridor is a living landscape, not a backdrop

Vancouver, Howe Sound, Squamish and Whistler sit within territories stewarded by Indigenous Peoples since time immemorial. The corridor also contains sensitive marine, forest, river and alpine environments that absorb enormous visitor pressure.

Responsible travel here is practical: use established access, learn whose territory you are visiting, obey closures, leave wildlife alone, pack out waste and avoid turning full parking areas into unsafe roadside situations.

High-impact habits that are easy to follow

  • Stay on designated trails and viewpoints
  • Pack out everything you carry into parks and backcountry
  • Give wildlife distance and never feed animals
  • Use legal parking; if a trailhead is full, choose another plan
  • Check fire restrictions and park advisories
  • Respect cultural sites and seek Indigenous-led interpretation where possible
  • Choose transit or walking where it genuinely works for your itinerary
Culture

Learn from Indigenous-led institutions

The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler is one of the strongest ways for visitors to learn directly about the Squamish Nation and Lil’wat Nation. Build it into the itinerary before the trip is full, not only as an alternative when weather turns bad.

Indigenous Tourism BC is another useful source for Indigenous-owned and Indigenous-led experiences across the province.
