The report’s authors did note that Vancouver’s crime rate is on the rise. Vancouver’s murder rate of 2.6 per 100,000 is well above the Canadian 1.8 per 100,000 average.

VANCOUVER - When an exhausted but triumphant Rick Hansen pushed himself into Vancouver on May 22, 1987, after circling the globe in a wheelchair for two years, the miles were all behind him but the journey was just beginning. There can't be many who don't know what this Canadian was doing — wheeling himself through 34 countries, 40,000 kilometres of road, highway, and track in the hopes of raising money to find a cure for spinal cord injury and challenging the able-bodied to make the world an easier place for the handicapped to live in.

Strong buyer demand has continued to push up prices in many parts of Vancouver, but the overall market conditions are starting to balance out, according to a monthly report by the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV). The latest numbers show that while prices were up overall from a year ago, the amount of increase greatly depended on location.

"No white elephants" was the mantra when 2010 Winter Olympics organizers began to build in 2003. On the first anniversary of the Games, locals have a menagerie of venues in various states of use. Yes, there are even some pale pachyderms. B.C. Place Stadium -- where the Games opened Feb. 12, 2010, and closed 17 days later -- is undergoing a $458-million retractable-roof retrofit to be completed by the fall. Across False Creek, the Vancouver Olympic Village is in receivership over $740 million that developer Millennium owes City Hall.
